The summer of 2020 has been, in many ways, a summer of reckoning. Protestors, both peaceful and violent, have taken to the streets to face off with law enforcement who have reacted in ways both peaceful and violent. Amid all the chaos, calls for police defunding or reform has been loud. One target of many of the people demanding change to police tactics is K9 units.
K9 serves in a variety of roles in law enforcement. It is an area with a budget already stretched way too thin in many departments and bound by restrictions enacted by groups or individuals with little to no knowledge of how working dogs…work.
